Title: Head of Communications and Media- open to Somali nationals only

ROLE PURPOSE: 

The Head of Communications and Media reports to the Senior Director Programme Development, Communications and Engagement (PDCE) and he/she is responsible for: 

  • Developing and implementing communications and media plan for the country office 

  • Initiating drafts of media related outputs (press releases, Q&A documents and key advocacy messages) 

  • Consistently collects contents to ensure brand visibility (case studies, video, photos, multimedia contents etc) for use by the SCI and members 

  • Proactively works with humanitarian team to support humanitarian comms and media needs 

Overall, s/he is responsible for designing and delivering robust communications and media plan to support country strategic plan. S/he is responsible for developing and sharing of quality information and other communication materials, managing and updating social media platforms and supporting other staff members to achieve brand consistency in line with organizational policy standards and donor requirements. 

S/he works closely with the New Business Development team, area leadership team, Child Rights and Advocacy team, Program Managers and partners to promote Save the Children’s policy influencing and public campaigns to influence internal and external audience. The post holder contributes to maintaining relationships with the media, members and donors to advance children’s rights agenda in the country. 

SCOPE OF ROLE:

Reports to: Senior Director Programme Development, Communications and Engagement

Staff directly reporting to this post:  2 Media and Comms officers and 1 Assistant.

Working contacts: 

Internal: Matrix managed by Senior Director Programme Development, Communications and Engagement for work plans and sign-off procedures, Member, SCI media team (GCCU/GMU) and national media with technical support provided by Regional Media, Technical Specialists, Humanitarian team, Program Managers, thematic leads, partnership and humanitarian team 

External: CSOs partners, child rights groups, parent associations, media, consultants, service providers, local authorities, and partners, international and domestic publics. 

Development & Quality team, advocacy colleagues, Regional Advisors, technical counterparts in other organisation, donors etc. The role is also expected to engage with internal technical working groups and communities of practice

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

QUALIFICATIONS 

Degree in Social Science, Journalism, Information and Communication or Diploma with required experience. 

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential: 

  • Recommended a minimum of at least 7 years of experience in advocacy, campaigns and communications management within an NGO or media house 

  • Excellent writing skills for the preparation of newsletters, brochures, documents, reports and correspondence 

  • Strong representational and communication skills 

  • Ability to lead and manage under pressure 

  • Ability to work calmly under pressure in a rapidly changing context 

  • Proven team management skills, adaptability and flexibility 

  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly into the field 

  • Experience of working in an insecure environment 

  • Experience of operations and logistics planning 

  • Fluency in written and spoken Somali 

  • Fluency in written and spoken English and computer literate. 

  • Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s policies and procedures. 

Desirable: 

  • Experience of working for or with Save the Children, or a related rights or development organisation 

  • Research and information analysis skills and capacity to propose and coordinate relevant actions accordingly. 

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills. 

  • Highly developed cultural awareness and ability to work well in an international and matrix management environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. 

  • Strong results orientation, with the ability to challenge existing mind-sets. 

  • Ability and willingness to dramatically change work practices and hours, and work with incoming surge teams, in the event of emergencies 

  • Fluency in English, both verbal and written, required
